THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ushering in a new political dawn for Kerala, senior Congress leader V.D. Satheesan was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the state on Monday, marking the official return of the United Democratic Front (UDF) to power after a decade. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by the Governor in a grand ceremony held at the packed Central Stadium in the capital, attended by thousands of UDF workers, national Congress leaders, and dignitaries.
The swearing-in ceremony also saw the induction of key cabinet ministers, officially putting an end to days of intense negotiations. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the second-largest coalition partner, emerged as a major powerhouse in the new cabinet. Acknowledging their crucial role in the UDF's electoral sweep, the Congress leadership has allocated several heavyweight portfolios to the League.
Sources indicate that senior IUML ministers will handle vital departments, including Public Works (PWD), Education, and Local Self-Government. The smooth allocation of these portfolios is seen as a strategic move by CM Satheesan to ensure absolute unity within the front from day one.
Addressing the media shortly after taking the oath, Chief Minister Satheesan stated that his government’s immediate priority will be the financial restructuring of the state and the swift implementation of welfare schemes promised during the campaign. The newly formed cabinet is scheduled to convene its first official meeting later this evening to take stock of the state's administrative affairs.
