Thrissur, April 22: A powerful explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Mundathikode, Thrissur, has resulted in multiple deaths and left several others injured, casting a shadow over the upcoming Thrissur Pooram festival.
The incident occurred while fireworks were being prepared for the festival. A large number of workers were present at the unit when the explosion took place, leading to heavy casualties.
Several injured persons have been admitted to nearby hospitals, including Thrissur Medical College, with some reported to be in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses said the blast was intense, followed by a series of smaller explosions as stored firecrackers ignited. The impact was felt in nearby areas, causing panic among residents.
Rescue operations were carried out by fire and rescue personnel, though efforts were hampered by continuous explosions and the hazardous nature of the site.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion. Preliminary indications point to possible safety lapses and the presence of a large quantity of stored firecrackers.
The tragedy has raised concerns over safety measures in firecracker units, especially during festival preparations.
