Rain to Intensify Across Kerala; IMD Issues Yellow and Orange Alerts in Several Districts

Thiruvananthapuram, May 4: Summer rain is set to intensify across Kerala over the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department issuing fresh weather alerts in multiple districts.

The IMD has warned that isolated heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph are likely in different parts of the state till May 9.

For May 4, yellow alert has been sounded in districts including Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad, while orange alert was briefly issued in some central Kerala regions following intense afternoon showers.

The weather agency has also indicated that alert status will continue in various districts through the week, with chances of heavy rain shifting across central and northern Kerala on successive days.

Intermittent rain that began over the weekend has already brought partial relief from the severe summer heat. However, officials cautioned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, sudden strong winds, uprooting of trees, and waterlogging in low-lying areas remain possible.

Disaster management authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorm hours, stay away from open spaces and weak structures, and ensure caution in hilly regions due to chances of minor landslips and slippery roads.

The current weather change is being linked to active atmospheric systems over the Arabian Sea and southern peninsula, which are enhancing moisture flow into Kerala.

Authorities said the situation will be monitored daily and district-specific warnings may be revised depending on rainfall intensity.
