Kannur Dental College Denies Role in Nithin Raj’s Death; Links Incident to Loan App Issue

Kannur, April 19: The management of a private dental college in Kannur has issued a clarification regarding the death of BDS student Nithin Raj, stating that the institution had no role in the incident and that misleading information is being circulated.

In an official note, the college said Nithin had not filed any complaint against teachers or the institution prior to his death. According to the management, the student was called to the principal’s office on the day of the incident to discuss issues related to a loan taken through a mobile app, after a faculty member received repeated calls and messages from loan agents.

The college stated that Nithin had informed authorities that the loan was taken for his brother-in-law and that he was asked to remove the teacher’s name from the reference list. The student, however, reportedly denied adding the teacher’s details.

Officials said the concerned teacher was preparing to file a complaint with the cyber cell over the harassment calls when the student left the room. Shortly after, he allegedly jumped from the building. The college reiterated that no staff member or the institution was involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, the case continues to be under investigation. Police have registered cases, including abetment of suicide, and are probing multiple angles, including alleged harassment and the role of loan app operators.

The incident has triggered widespread debate in Kerala over student welfare, harassment, and the impact of digital loan applications.
