Thiruvananthapuram, April 17: Kerala is experiencing intense summer heat, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert in 12 districts as hot and humid conditions persist across the state.
According to the IMD, the alert is in place for all districts except Idukki and Wayanad, with temperatures expected to remain above normal over the next few days. Maximum temperatures are likely to touch around 40°C in Palakkad, 39°C in Kollam, and 38°C in Kottayam, while several other districts may record around 37°C.
Officials noted that temperatures are currently 2–3°C above seasonal averages, increasing discomfort due to high humidity levels.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also warned of high ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels across multiple districts. An orange alert has been issued in some regions where UV index levels have reached up to 8, indicating potential health risks from prolonged sun exposure.
Authorities have advised the public to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people, and those working outdoors. Experts warn that the combination of heat and humidity can significantly increase the “real feel” temperature and lead to dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
AdvisoryResidents have been advised to:
Avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm
Stay hydrated and wear light cotton clothing
Avoid leaving children or pets in parked vehicles
Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast isolated light rain or thundershowers in parts of the state in the coming days, offering limited relief from the prevailing heat.
