IMD Escalates Rainfall Warnings in Kerala; Orange Alert for Kannur and Kasaragod

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has intensified its weather warnings for Kerala, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across the state over the next few days. Authorities have sounded an Orange Alert for the northern districts of Kannur and Kasaragod for Monday, anticipating severe downpours that could disrupt daily life. In addition, a Yellow Alert has been issued for eight districts today, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram. The weather pattern is expected to continue, with Yellow Alerts extended to several northern districts for May 19. Coupled with the heavy rains, the IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of 40 to 60 kmph. Consequently, a strict ban on fishing has been enforced along the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has urged extreme caution. Residents in landslide-prone and low-lying areas have been advised to relocate to safer camps if necessary. Authorities have also warned the public against crossing rivers, bathing in water bodies, and parking vehicles under trees during thunderstorms.
